Erickavu N. Sunil is an acclaimed Carnatic Percussionist - Mridangam & Konnakkol, Academic & Rhythmology Researcher, Multilingual Author & Columnist, and Cultural Ambassador & Arts Advocate. Recognized for his authoritative contributions to Indian classical music and rhythmic studies, he represents a rare synthesis of performance excellence, scholarly depth, literary articulation, and institutional leadership.

An A-Grade Mridangam Artiste of All India Radio, India’s national public service broadcaster, Sunil currently serves as Assistant Professor of Mridangam at Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed to be University for Arts & Culture, a premier institution globally renowned for classical and traditional arts education. His career bridges the concert platform and the academic arena, positioning Carnatic rhythmology within both artistic and intellectual frameworks.

Trained under eminent gurus (teachers) and having performed alongside legendary vocalists and instrumental maestros, Sunil has carved a distinctive niche in Carnatic rhythmology, blending tradition with innovation and performance with pedagogy. His contributions span concert performance, percussion ensembles, scholarly research, and global outreach in Indian percussion.

As a scholar and educator, Sunil contributes actively to curriculum development, research discourse, and faculty training in Carnatic rhythmology and percussion pedagogy. He conducts Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs), national seminars, lecture-demonstrations, and specialized workshops across leading universities and cultural institutions. His academic work explores the science of rhythm, the mathematics of tala, performance aesthetics, and the structured transmission of traditional knowledge systems.

Sunil is the author of two landmark publications that have strengthened contemporary scholarship on the Mridangam:

  • RESOUNDING MRIDANGAM: The Majestic South-Indian Drum (2021) — an award-winning English work internationally referenced and adopted in graduate and postgraduate music programmes.

This extensive corporate background enriched his strategic thinking, institutional planning, and organizational leadership, qualities that now inform his work as an academician, author, and founder of cultural initiatives.
